We’ve seen “World Edition” phones that come with domestic CDMA radios and a SIM card slot for international GSM reception. We’ve seen certain GSM cell phones that come with dual SIM card slots. The next-generation Motorola MING A1800 seems to take it one step further, because it is a CDMA and quad-band GSM device, and it just so happens to have two SIM card slots too.

Assuming that my math is correct (1+1+1=?), this means that the A1800 is capable of handling three different cell phone numbers all at once. I’d imagine that there would have to be some sort of manager on the Linux-powered smartphone to handle all those incoming calls.

Outside of this trio, the new MOTOMING2 features a 3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and a touchscreen display. More details are expected at CTIA, so we’ll just continue to sit on our pins and needles until then.

Even so, the styling and the form factor look like they could be right in line with what the Finnish phonemaker would actually do. The Nokia E52 takes on a similar appearance as the existing Nokia E50, but slaps on a slider form factor and an understated sense of business chic to attract the fashionable corporates amongst us.

Naturally, the spec sheet is pretty much non-existent on this potentially non-existent phone, but based on what Nokia has done in the past with its business-minded E-series smartphones, the Nokia E52 could easily be outfitted with things like WiFi, more RAM, and maybe even the latest Feature Pack. All of these could be packed on top of what the original E50 had going for it.

The guys at Intomobile are saying this is little more than a PhotoShop. If it is, the artist has done a pretty convincing job.

This represents Sammy’s first attempt at mobile television with AT&T, so I find it a little curious that they decided to go with such a small display on such a compact candybar handset. After all, the AT&T Mobile TV service is supposed to feature “high-quality programming.”

Outside of the 2.3-inch landscape display “comparable to DVD quality”, the Samsung Access also gets equipped with dual-band 3G, quad-band GSM, Bluetooth, microSD, and a 1.3 megapixel camera with video. No word on price, but the Samsung Access should hit the shelves of AT&T some time in May.

It’s the new Motorola Q9h smartphone, one of the two Windows Mobile devices recently launched by Canada’s dog of cellular provider. My initial impressions are that it’s quite a bit wider than I expected, but they’ve managed to keep the profile reasonably slender.

Booting up the device, I was initially shown a Motorola logo, then a Fido logo, then the Windows Mobile logo. I guess all three companies wanted their three seconds of fame. Having been accustomed to a touchscreen PocketPC device (T-Mobile MDA), navigating through the menu without touching the screen was a little off-putting. This was furthered by the fact that Fido did a little branding of their own with the phone.

I’m still getting accustomed to the ins and outs of this device — I’m already having trouble getting it to sync with Gmail, although Hotmail works fine — but I hope to have it all worked out by the time I got to ship this thing back. Expect the full review in the next week or two.

Ok, this isn’t official news, but it’s as official as I can get

Our Nokia rep, who thinks we’re great told me something intriguing today.

He’s said the N96 hasn’t been given the complete green light yet (I’m guessing Nokia wanted to get something that resembles the real thing out in time for MWC).

And the delays are due to them adding (at the last minute) a Xenon flash, ala N82! Finally, an all in one phone with almost nothing (bar BlackBerry) missing!

From what I can tell of the marketing stuff he left for the N82, Xenon flashes seem to be Nokia’s next big push from now on, which is fine by me.

When you think about it, it makes sense that Nokia wants to make the N96 the real flagship all-in-one device. Why would the N82 make better photos than the company’s flagship device? Market segmentation? Ok, that makes sense, but still if we can’t get a better battery, put a Xenon flash inside Nokia. Will “please” help?

We did expected this to come, and at some point we event thought the WiMAX-enabled tablet will be called “N830.”

Aside from the WiMAX radio, we’ve no information that the device will have any different specs. More RAM and a better/faster CPU are certainly welcome, but I doubt we’ll see that happening. Instead, Nokia just decided to use a new color for the WiMAX tablet. And the color it is — what seems like black brushed aluminum adds an extra touch to the device, making it look more serious and I guess, more enterprise friendly. We’ll keep our eyes wide open and get back to you as soon as we get any new info, k?

I don’t quite understand why it takes so much time for Palm to release the device with specs that match many of the HTC models.Anyway, the Palm Treo 800w is spotted in the leaked Sprint Roadmap and it should hit the CDMA/WiMAX carrier in July. The new device will replace the 700w model and will be the single most powerful Treo released to date — the addition of autonomous GPS is certainly new for Palm devices. There’s also EV-DO Rev A support, WiFi, Windows Mobile 6 and a camera, though there will also be a camera-less version of the phone available. We’re not sure whether the image on the right is real, but something tells us even if it changes, it won’t change much. Stay tuned…

It’s still not quite up to snuff with 3G networks, but it could prove to be the next best thing. This might be particularly interesting to iPhone owners out there, because it means that you can achieve faster data rates on existing networks. No need to swap out a radio or get AT&T to upgrade their infrastructure. The solution, according to Nokia Siemens Networks, is completely software based.

This development bumps the effective speed of EDGE is a much healthier 592 kbps. Like I said, it’s not quite the same as HSDPA or UMTS, but it’s about as good as it’s going to get for EDGE. Nokia says that they will follow up in the third quarter of this year with EGPRS 2. This standard will download at up to 1.2Mbps and upload at 473 kbps.

We’re not really sure how they’ll go about offering this increase in speed, but iPhone owners will probably want to keep their ears peeled about this one. That is, unless they’re waiting out for a 3G iPhone anyways.

The LG Venus has been available through Verizon Wireless for a little while now, but we all know that Canadian service providers tend to lag a little behind. Rogers isn’t the only Canadian telecom to announce a new LG cell phone today, because Telus Mobility is proud to say that they’ll have the LG Venus.

While it takes on a similar slider form factor as the LG Chocolate, the the LG Venus replaces the conventional five way navigator with a dynamic touchscreen that sits underneath the main screen. This adapts to the situation, showing music controls when you’re bobbing your head or camera controls when you’re snapping a pic. The Venus will ship in both black and pink, and it can take advantage of all the Telus SPARK services like TV and radio.

No word on pricing, but “LG is excited to launch our LG VENUS Touch phone in Canada with TELUS. Canadians looking for style and state-of-the-art technology will love this phone.”
